How We Can Help

Ease Emotional Pain

We gently support you to explore and process difficult emotions, helping to reduce distress and bring a sense of relief. We do this by providing a safe, non-judgemental space to externalise your feelings, using evidence-based techniques to help you sit with and transform painful emotions until they lose their power to overwhelm you. Over time, this creates the emotional space needed for a greater sense of calm and relief.

Heal Trauma

We provide a means for you to unburden your fears or something that may be “too much” for others to hear, in a way that is grounded in neurobiology and underpinned by safety, choice, and empowerment. We focus on your safety and stabilisation first, before talking about your story. We only move at a pace that respects your nervous system. By understanding how traumatic events impact your brain, your nervous system, and your body, we can help you process painful memories without becoming overwhelmed by them, allowing you to move from "surviving" to truly living.

Promote Clarity

We help you make sense of your thoughts, feelings and experiences, bringing greater insight and perspective to what you’re going through. Through reflective questioning and objective feedback, we help you connect dots between your past experiences, current reactions and what matters most to you. This newfound perspective makes it easier to navigate complex decisions and life challenges with confidence.

Improve Wellbeing

Our work supports your overall wellbeing, helping you feel more balanced, grounded and supported in daily life. By identifying the specific habits and limiting beliefs that make life feel like an uphill climb, we collaborate to find small, manageable shifts in your daily rhythm that conserve your inner resources. This focus helps you move from just “getting through the day” to feeling truly engaged with life in sustainable ways.

Build Resilience

We help you develop inner strength, coping strategies and self-trust, so you feel better equipped to navigate life’s challenges over time. We focus on identifying your existing strengths and layering in practical coping strategies - like mindfulness, reframing the narrative and emotional regulation. This toolkit ensures you are supported through both everyday stress and significant life transitions, ensuring you don’t bounce back, but grow forward.

Get To Know Us

We believe that a sense of ease and a fulfilling life is possible when we meet our struggles with compassion, new perspectives and the right support.  At the heart of what we do is a passion to help others because we too have struggled, and found therapy extremely supportive in navigating those challenges. By holding a compassionate space for you to work through your challenges, it may be just the support you need to make a positive difference in your life and those around you.

Counsellor and Psychotherapist

Hi, I’m Kim.

I believe that struggling at times is simply part of being human. Life doesn’t always unfold neatly, and most of us will find ourselves feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure of the way forward at some point.

As your therapist, I offer a warm, calm and non-judgmental space where you can talk openly about what’s going on for you, make sense of your emotions, and reconnect with the strengths you already have. At a pace that feels right for you, we’ll work together to explore beliefs, practical ways to calm the nervous system, move through difficult emotions with more ease and compassion, and see old stories with fresh eyes. It will be a privilege to walk this path with you.

  • My path into counselling was shaped by my own life experiences. There have been times when I didn’t like myself or my life very much - periods of feeling stretched by responsibilities and relationships, weighed down by grief, and lying awake at night worrying about the future after unexpected changes. Yes, life can indeed be messy.

I also know how much it helps to be truly listened to. During my more difficult times, the compassionate support I received helped me to feel understood and less alone. That steady presence turned down the volume of self-judgement, calmed my mind, and helped me see my situations with more clarity. These experiences stayed with me, and ultimately inspired the work I do today.

I’m a trained Mindfulness Meditation Teacher (Greater Good Science Center) and hold a Master of Counselling & Psychotherapy from the University of Adelaide. I’ve worked with many people from all walks of life, and I’m continually reminded that even when someone feels deeply stuck or hurting, there is often more resilience and wisdom present than they realise.

When I’m not in the therapy room, you’ll often find me hiking or practising yoga but you may also find me patiently (and sometimes impatiently) trying to perfect my sourdough or enjoying long, lively meals with family and friends.

Susanna Anderson

Counsellor and Psychotherapist
MCounPsych (Clinical Trauma Practice), MACA (Level 2)
Adelaide

Hello, I'm Susanna.

Underneath the “I’ve got my act together” exterior is someone who has experienced their share of life’s challenges.  At one time I found myself unable to suppress or “think away” issues that were plaguing me and making me unhappy. When I went to a therapist it was such a huge relief to unburden myself to someone who would keep my thoughts and feelings confidential.  She listened to me empathically and without judgement, and I felt safe to explore my deepest thoughts, feelings and vulnerabilities. Our conversations helped me gain new insights and quietened the ruminations, allowing me to move from unhappiness to contentment.

  • In my studies I chose to specialise in Clinical Trauma Practice because I believe no story is too dark or too difficult to be told. Whether you are dealing with recent upheaval or wounds that have stayed with you for years, I provide a steady, safe space for you to explore those vulnerabilities and am committed to sitting with you in the depths of your experience, helping you process what feels unprocessable.

I am also equally passionate about supporting people when “life happens” and we struggle with relationships, change, feeling stuck or emotionally overwhelmed, grief and loss, or simply not knowing which path to take next.

I bring a blend of lived experience and clinical application to our sessions, backed by my Master of Counselling & Psychotherapy (Clinical Trauma Practice) from the University of Adelaide. Your life is precious, and whatever brings you to us, I promise my full commitment to you and would be honoured to help you find clarity and contentment.

Outside of work I really enjoy listening to music, reading books (when I’m not bingeing the latest TV show) and drinking tea, as long as it’s made the way I like it! I’m grateful to have wonderful family and friends in my life, and to work in a profession that is meaningful for me.

Our Approach

At The Compassion Corner, we engage with a diverse cross section of the community from adolescents and beyond. We believe there is no single therapy that fits everyone. That’s why we take an integrative, person-centred approach, using therapeutic methods that feel safe, supportive and effective for you. Working collaboratively, we help you build new ways of coping and relating.

Our strengths-based approach draws from a variety of modalities, including:

  • Helping you recognise patterns in thinking and behaviour, so you can develop healthier responses.

  • Supporting you to build psychological flexibility, reduce struggle with thoughts and feelings, and move toward what matters.

  •  A powerful approach for understanding and transforming emotional patterns, building self-compassion and healing emotional wounds.

  • Tools to regulate your nervous system, manage distress and reconnect to a sense of calm.

  • Using a neurobiological framework, and working at a pace that respects your nervous system, we help you understand how emotions and past experiences live in the body, using grounding, gentle awareness and regulation techniques to support safety and connection.

We offer Online appointments

Online appointments are ideal for anyone who can’t easily make it to our office in Adelaide.

You may have confided in or spoken to friends or family who care deeply about you, yet you still feel unheard, misunderstood or the issue just won’t go away.

Loved ones offer advice and try and “fix” things that may need to heal differently. At The Compassion Corner we offer a neutral, confidential space. In our sessions, the focus is entirely on your experience—without judgment or fixed opinions. Together, we’ll move at your pace to make sense of what’s troubling you, using practical tools to ease emotional pain and build lasting resilience.

We understand that taking the first step into therapy can feel uncomfortable or daunting, but if you are here, it may be a sign you are ready to take that step and try something else to feel better?

  • We both work with clients who have experienced trauma, however Susanna has a specialisation in Clinical Trauma which may suit clients with more complex trauma.

"I’ve never told anyone my full story. What if it’s too much?"

Susanna is trained specifically to hold "heavy" stories. You don’t have to worry about protecting her or filtering your experience. Her role is to be a steady, non-judgmental container for whatever you need to share. She will work at a pace that feels manageable for you, ensuring you never feel "flooded" or overwhelmed.

"Do I have to talk about everything right away?"

Not at all. In fact, in trauma-informed care, we often focus on safety and stabilisation first. We only go into the details when you feel grounded and ready. You are always in the driver’s seat; we go as slow as you need to go.

"How is Trauma counselling different from regular counselling?"

While general counselling is wonderful for navigating life's hurdles, a clinical trauma focus looks specifically at how traumatic events impact your brain, your nervous system, and your body.

We use frameworks like the Window of Tolerance to help you understand why you might feel "numb" or "hyper-alert," and we use specific techniques to help bring your system back into balance.

"I feel like I should be 'over it' by now. Is it too late to start?"

There is no "expiry date" on healing. Whether something happened twenty years ago or two months ago, your feelings are valid. Our goal isn't just to help you "get over it," but to help you integrate your experiences so they no longer have power over your present happiness.

"What actually happens in a first session?"

The first meeting is mostly about "the fit"—seeing if you feel comfortable and safe. We’ll chat very generally about what’s bringing you in, we’ll explain how we work, and we can decide together if we’re a good match. There is no pressure to share your deepest vulnerabilities in the first session.

Your comfort is our priority. In our sessions, you are always welcome to ask for a break, change the topic, or ask questions about the process.

  • This is a great question. While there is a significant overlap—as these professions provide high-quality "talk therapy" to help you navigate emotional challenges—the main differences lie in training and clinical focus.

Psychology: Focuses heavily on diagnosis and clinical assessment. Psychologists often use "top-down" approaches like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to change thought patterns and behaviors. They are the traditional choice if you need a formal mental health diagnosis or psychometric testing.

Counselling: Focuses on current life challenges and transitions. It is generally "here-and-now" oriented, helping you develop practical coping strategies for specific issues like grief, relationship stress, or workplace burnout.

Psychotherapy: Goes deeper into the "why." It looks at long-term patterns, childhood roots, and the nervous system. Using somatic (body-mind connection) and emotion-focused tools, it aims for a fundamental shift in how you relate to yourself and the world, rather than just managing symptoms.

At Compassion Corner, we bridge these worlds. We combine the practical tools of counselling with the deep-reaching, somatic, and trauma-informed methods of psychotherapy to offer a truly holistic path to wellness.
